The challenge

Increasing awareness of the AEDC

The Australian Early Development Census is an important tool for measuring the childhood development, providing evidence to inform policy and planning across the health, education and community sectors.

Although the census is conducted every three years, educators, parents and community members are unfamiliar with its purpose, methodology and how data is used to improve childhood development outcomes.

To address this, the AEDC engaged Paper Giant to update their website to improve community awareness and access to data.

Discovery

Balancing user needs

A series of discovery interviews were conducted with parents, education leaders and community members to understand their needs and evaluate how the current website met, or didn’t meet their needs.

Based on these findings, I facilitated workshops with representatives from each cohort to align on a desired outcome. This work formed the foundation of the UX / UI design work.

This research led to the development of user stories that were used throughout the design phase to ensure the user was always central to the design process.

Visual design

Bringing data to life

A key painpoint was the difficulty of accessing census results which where often buried within documents making them hard to access.

Data was reformatted into visually engaging graphics which were strategically featured throughout the site to enhance accessibility and to increase the visibility of the data.

User interface

Making resources easier to find

The AEDC offers a wealth of resources for researchers, educators and parents; however these resources were under utilised the link is hidden in the top of the header.

To improve usability the resources page was redesigned to include a robust filter, enabling users to sort content based on their user group, media type and domain and a direct link to the resource page was placed in the primary IA to improve discoverability.

Outcome

A new brand identity

The final outcome was a rebranded AEDC website featuring bold colours and a playful design, inspired by the children the website ultimately serves.

Alongside the design system and information architecture we delivered a concise research report detailing our findings and design approach to support a seamless implementation.
